Charter Schools Buck Trend and Move from Extended School Year Back to Traditional Calendar
Survey shows extended year works for parents and students but not for teachers
A handful of Detroit charter schools plan to modify how long students are in school. Four schools operated by Cornerstone are moving from an extended 11 month calendar to a traditional year. Cornerstone opened its charter schools six years ago with a calendar modeled after its private school program which includes just six weeks off in the summer. Cornerstone CEO Tom Willis tells WDET’s Amy Miller that they’ve discovered that the advantages of an extended year are outweighed by other needs. He says that has also lead to a need for additional teachers for next year.
