Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert is planning to bring Major League Soccer to Detroit. He’s partnering with Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores. Gilbert wants to develop a $1 billion soccer stadium on the site of the unfinished Wayne County Jail project downtown. He says the stadium answers a longstanding question about the site’s future.

“Do we want a jail at the foot of downtown, at the front door, or do we want a major development that’s going to create great economics for job creation, for tax roll creation, and for overall optimism as you move through the city.

Gilbert previously offered $50 million for the land, which has remained undeveloped since 2013. If the plans move forward, the new stadium would be located within walking distance of Ford FieldComerica Park, and the new Detroit Red Wings arena. Gilbert says construction could be completed by 2020.
