Darnell Earley Will Step Down From DPS

Detroit Public School’s Emergency Manager plans to step down at the end of the month.

Yesterday the controversial emergency manager of Detroit Public Schools announced he will step down from his post at the end of the month. Darnell Earley faced long odds as the state’s representative overseeing DPS, but that position was suddenly dwarfed over the past several weeks as the Flint water crisis unfolded. Host Stephen Henderson talks with Detroit News political reporter Johnathan Oosting about Earley’s resignation.

Legislation: When asked what this means for the future of legislation surrounding DPS, Oosting says, “What [his resignation] does is removes a roadblock from even having discussions to those deals.”

Split in Two: The legislation coming from Lansing on DPS would split the school district. “What the bill would do is create two separate districts, one would operate debt-free, and the other would use an existing millage to pay down debt,” Oosting says.
