Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Darnell Earley Resigns
Darnell Earley has served as DPS Emergency Manager since January 2015. Now he’s resigning.
Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Darnell Earley announced Tuesday he will step down at the end of this month.
Gov. Rick Snyder says Earley, who was the emergency manager in Flint, has done a very good job in Detroit under some very difficult circumstances.
Earley has presided over DPS as the district’s teachers led a campaign of sick-outs to protest dilapidated school buildings, classroom overcrowding and pay. The Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus called for Earley’s removal last week.
State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) is a member of the Legislative Black Caucus. It’s good he’s leaving, she says, but warns Earley shouldn’t be used as a scapegoat.
“The governor really also needs to take responsibility for what’s been done to DPS under state control — the previous emergency managers. We need an audit,” she says.
Gay-Dagnogo introduced legislation last week that would change the powers and time limits for emergency management.
