Detroit Income Taxpayers Can File Returns Electronically

State of Michigan is now processing the city’s returns.

The State of Michigan is now collecting and processing Detroit’s income tax returns. That means people who pay the tax can file their 2015 city returns electronically through the state. Carol O’Cleireacain is Detroit’s Deputy Mayor for Economic Policy, Planning, and Strategy. She tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller the new system will be better for taxpayers and the city. O’Cleireacain says the income tax is Detroit’s largest revenue source, accounting for about $250 million a year. The rate is 2.4% for city residents and 1.2% for non-residents who work in the city. This year’s filing deadline is April 18. Click on the audio player to hear the conversation.
