Toyota unveiled a research vehicle Tuesday that’s capable of receiving high-capacity satellite signals for higher data transfer. The automaker has partnered with Kymeta, the world’s leader in flat panel antenna technology. Nathan Kundtz is the CEO of Kymeta. He says the feature could replace 4G LTE connection in cars.

“So for many things this can be a much more cost effective pipe and deliver a tremendous amount of more data into the car. By virtually using the power of satellite where you can get many, more people at once. That’s why we can produce a terabyte of data into the car in a month,” Kundtz says.

Kundtz says the antenna could be used to send software and firmware updates to the car, as well has HD and 3D mapping for navigation. Toyota and Kymeta have been researching the technology since 2013.
