Governor Rick Snyder twice ran for governor of Michigan on a message of positivity and business pragmatism. His focus on economic resurgence was unfailing in his first term, and he touted improvements in the economy during the campaign for his second term. But the unemployment rate still lags behind the national average, and large swaths of the state still face economic hardship and near insolvency. What is the economic picture for 2016 and beyond? Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson tries to make sense of Michigan’s fiscal picture with Michigan State University economist and professor Charlie Ballard. Ballard also publishes the annual “State of the State” survey looking at the state’s economy.
