The Detroit Police Department has re-opened the Fifth Precinct on the city’s east side. Many precincts across the city were closed in Septemeber 2005 to reduce labor needs and cut back on costs.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says more precincts are scheduled to re-open.

“Precinct eight out next to the Meijer’s at Grand River and Lahser will be the next one we go on. I think the city made a bad decision about ten years ago closing these precincts. And we are getting them reopened and we are getting the police closer to the people,” Duggan says.

Duggan also says the police department will be one of the first to in the county to start deployment of body cameras on officers next year.
