The Americans with Disabilities Act Legacy Tour Stops in Detroit

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of ADA with a day of activities and resources for those with a disability.

Today as a part of a nationwide tour Eastern Market is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Officials and activists around the country are celebrating the ADA through the Legacy Tour where event organizers will take time to celebrate and show appreciation for those with disabilities. 

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a law that gave civil rights and protections to those with disabilities.

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein who is blind says the ADA has helped change his life and many others with disabilities.  

 “Just like 50 years ago, people like myself would’ve been institutionalized, we would’ve been sent away from society and now look, the people basically said, ‘not only should this person not be institutionalized, but we want him to represent us on our highest court.’”

July 26th is the anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. WDET’s Ron Lyons Jr spoke with Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein about the legacy of the legislation.
