Michigan Lawmakers Fight Plan to Stamp Out Post Offices

New legislation introduced in Congress is attempting to keep three U.S. mail processing centers in Michigan off of the chopping block.
The proposal, introduced by four members of Congress including Michigan’s U.S. Senator Gary Peters, calls for a two-year delay in the scheduled closure of mail processing centers in the Upper Peninsula’s Kingsford area, one in Lansing and another near Kalamazoo.
Peters and the others say residents and small business owners in rural communities depend on home mail deliveries for everything from Social Security checks to time-sensitive documents.
Many areas like Kingsford, for example, still do not have internet access.
The legislation also calls for making Saturday mail delivery permanent.
U.S. postal officials say they must eliminate some facilities and services because of dramatically declining revenues.
