Michigan Congresswoman Wants to Slow Down Fast Track Trade Authority

House Democrats are resisting GOP push to give the President power to make trade deals Congress can’t change.

The U.S. House could vote as soon as this week on whether to give the President the authority to negotiate trade deals that Congress could approve or reject but not change.

Supporters of the so-called “fast track” trade authority say it’s necessary for the U.S. to compete globally and is key to finalizing the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement.

Opponents say it could make it easier to move U.S. jobs overseas.

Those critics include Detroit’s Big Three automakers and Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

She tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter the proposed trade authority is missing some vital protections for workers.
