Detroit officials want residents to maintain and care for 75 parks this summer. The Adopt-a-Park initiative involves volunteers like Erica Jordan–who says she cleared out a space on Weaver Street last year so neighbors would want to use it again.
“You see a lot of people going over there now, and they clean up after they leave. They call us sometimes, and say, ‘Um, hey, they had a party over there but it looks good.’”
-Erica Jordan
Organizations adopting a park are required to mow grass and cut down weeds at least once every other week through October. The city will install a sign at each space, recognizing the group that’s taking care of the park.
