State Seeks to Replace Retiring Superintendent

Six candidates will interview for the position this week to replace Mike Flanagan–who is stepping down this summer.

 

Michigan has selected six finalists to fill the position of State Superintendent of the state’s schools. Current Superintendent Mike Flanagan will retire from the position in July. Michigan’s education system has had its highs and lows over the last few years. While high school graduation rates have been increasing, fourth grade reading proficiency ranks in the bottom ten states in the country. Amber Arellano is the Executive Director of non-partisan group The Education Trust-Midwest. She spoke with WDET’s J. Carlisle Larsen about some hopes she has for the next superintendent.
