Mary Sheffield Wants to Make Downtown Housing More Inclusive

A proposed ordinance may require developers to reserve units for affordable housing.

A proposed ordinance in Detroit could require all residential developers asking for public funds in the city to set aside at least 20 percent of their units for affordable housing. Detroit City Council Member Mary Sheffield is drafting the ordinance and hopes to present it to the rest of the council by mid-March. She spoke with WDET’s Bre’Anna Tinsley about how the ordinance could help slow gentrification and develop a more inclusive city.
