A Fortune 200 automotive supplier is relocating its global headquarters to downtown Detroit.

Adient, an automotive seat supplier, will move into the Marquette Building in the city’s historic Financial District.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says an opportunity like this was not always conceivable for the city.

“Had I called these guys three years ago and said we wanted to be in the competition when we were in bankruptcy, we wouldn’t have gotten a return phone call. Now, they called me to say, “Hey, you’re near the top of our list. Would you be interested?” and of course we jumped on the opportunity,” Duggan says.

Duggan says the company will bring in roughly 500 new jobs to the city and has promised to fill as many as possible with Detroit residents.

He says the decision for Adient to move its headquarters downtown is a major vote of confidence in the city.
