The WDET guitar, coined “Salt of Detroit,” was brought to life guitar maker Gabriel Currie of Echopark Guitars and Detroit multi-media artist Sabrina Nelson, who sketched the faces of Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and others onto the body.

A diverse array of Detroit guitarists, including Shara Nova, Dennis Coffey, Reverend Robert Jones, and more, gathered at Aretha’s Jazz Cafe at the Music Hall in Detroit to play this piece of art.

The performances span multiple genres and demonstrate the versatility of the instrument. “Without those different voices, it wouldn’t have the sound that it has, and so it was really beautiful to hear it have different languages today,” says Sabrina Nelson.

Performers include Don Was, Jax Anderson, Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), Brett Lucas, Mayaeni, Dennis Coffey, Duminie Deporres, Wayne Gerard, Reverend Robert Jones, Kenny Watson, Carolyn Striho and Scott Dailey.
