Gov. Whitmer Extends “Stay Home” Order Until May 28th, Allows Manufacturing Workers to Resume Work
Manufacturing workers can resume work on Monday, May 11. The Big 3 restarts work on May 18th.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended her “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order through May 28th.
But, the governor is allowing manufacturing workers to resume work as early as Monday, May 11th. Auto manufacturers, with the blessing of the United Auto Workers Union, won’t restart until May18th.
“We’ve really pushed the curve down dramatically,” Whitmer said. “We’ve saved our health system and we’ve ramped up our PPE (personal protection equipment) testing, and contact tracing – which has enabled us to safely begin to phase in sectors of our economy.”
Manufacturing facilities must adopt preventative measures to protect their workers from the spread of COVID-19. These measures include screenings, creating dedicated entry points, and suspending entry of all non-essential in-person visits. All businesses must require masks to be worn when workers cannot maintain six feet of separation from others.

Gov. Whitmer also detailed the six phases of her MI Safe Start Plan to re-engage Michigan’s economy. She announced today that Michigan is currently in phase 3 — flattening.
MI Safe Start Phases:
- Uncontrolled Growth: Increasing number of new cases every day, overwhelming the state’s health systems
- Persistent Spread: Continuing to see high case levels with concern about health system capacity
- Flattening: The epidemic is no longer increasing and the health-system’s capacity is sufficient for current needs
- Improving: Cases, hospitalizations and deaths are clearly declining
- Containing: Continued case and death rate improvements, with outbreaks quickly contained
- Post-Pandemic: Community spread not expected to return
