The Detroit Police Department says the Coleman A-Young Municipal Center will reopen this morning. It was closed yesterday after a security breach.
The building was placed on lockdown yesterday morning after a gun appeared in a briefcase during an x-ray scan. But, by the time security spotted the weapon, its owner had already walked onto an elevator.
Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt says the whole situation could have been avoided if the owner of the weapon came forward.
“At least have the decency to say, ‘Hey I made a mistake. I’m not a terrorist. I screwed up. And the people in this building, this complex center, don’t have to be in fear.’ That’s all I’m asking. Come forward. I’m not mad. You taught me some things today that I need to tighten up,” Dolunt says.
The person of interest is a white male in his 40s wearing a yellow shirt and dark suit.
Officials from the Detroit Police Department are expected to meet with the private company responsible for building security sometime today.
