Wayne County hosted a health care enrollment event in Detroit Thursday. Residents applied for Affordable Care Act coverage, Medicaid, or the Healthy Michigan plan—which is a Medicaid expansion.

Chris Johnson is the Division Director of Access to Care for the Wayne County Department of Health, Veterans, and Community Wellness. He says the event gives residents an opportunity to explore their options for health insurance.

“We’re seeing an estimated numbers around 13 to 16 percent of our Wayne County Population remains uninsured,” Johnson says. “That’s probably more than 200,000 people. Roughly half of these individuals are Medicaid eligible but just have not enrolled in the coverage.”

Johnson says the event also provides information on other services the department offers for veterans and public health.

Wayne County will host another health care fair on November 18th in Taylor.
