Officials in Royal Oak say concerns over coyotes running rampant in the city are overblown. A recent sighting of a coyote in a Royal Oak resident’s yard has led to calls for a massive effort to trap and kill the animals.

But the Royal Oak Nature Society’s Bob Muller says coyotes have been in the city for over a decade.

They probably are running around the Ren Cen to be really honest,” Muller says.  ”Because they’re not just hitting the suburbs, they’re in all the neighborhoods in Detroit also. These have become urban animals. They are used to living near us, they know how to stay out of sight.

Muller says coyotes are smaller animals that mostly hunt rodents and are not known to be hostile towards humans. He says on the rare occasion a person comes in contact with a coyote they should be cautious just as they would when encountering a deer or other wild animal.
