Essex County council members are working to expand the area’s bicycle infrastructure. They are applying for a provincial grant to build a new rest area and cycling trails around the Essex Civic Centre. County Manager of Transportation Planning Jane Mustac says the funding would help a long-term plan to create about 800 kilometers of bicycle paths.
“We’re about two and a half years in. We’ve done the way-finding signs that adds us up to about 150 kilometers, but actual built trails we’re at about 40 kilometers.”

Mustac says though individual municipalities have bicycle paths, they do not run county-wide. She says she expects the trail network to be completed in about 20 years.
