Michigan U.S. Sen. Gary Peters heads to the Middle East this week for a firsthand look at efforts to combat the group calling itself the Islamic State.

Peters will discuss security matters with officials in Jordan, Iraq and other areas of the Middle East.

Peters says at the top of the agenda will be how well security forces are fighting terrorism and addressing humanitarian concerns resulting from the ongoing bloodshed in the region.

Iran will also figure into the mix.

Congress returns from recess next week and is expected to take up the Obama Administration’s proposed nuclear deal with Iran.

Peters, a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, has not yet said whether he will support the deal.
