Michigan Drivers to Get $400-Per-Vehicle Refund on Auto Insurance Payments
MLive reporter Lauren Gibbons says says Michigan drivers with insurance policies as of Oct. 31 are eligible for $400 refunds in 2022, but some experts and critics say “drivers should be getting more money because they’re not using their cars as much.”
This week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that Michigan drivers can expect a refund of $400 per insured vehicle from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) in 2022. MLive reporter Lauren Gibbons says regardless of refunds and reforms, Michigan’s auto insurance rates remain much higher than other states.

Lauren Gibbons covers politics and policy for MLive. She says since the 2019 auto insurance reforms, “based on the data that we’ve seen … our insurance costs have gone down in Michigan … but they remain high compared to the rest of the country.” Gibbons says Michigan drivers with insurance policies as of Oct. 31 are eligible for $400 refunds in 2022, but, “there’s a lot of experts and critics out there who say drivers should be getting more money because they’re not using their cars as much.”
Gibbons says regardless of the refund amount, we’re still going to be talking about auto insurance reforms in Michigan well beyond next year. “The legislative leadership who were all heavily involved [in the 2019 auto insurance reform law] … they’ve been pretty hesitant to go back in and make changes,” she says.
