Attorney General Dana Nessel Determined to Shut Down Line 5

Nessel talks about her efforts to shut down Line 5, her ongoing work on the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal and abuse within the Catholic Church.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel made news at the 2019 Mackinac Policy Conference, saying she will act to shut down the Line 5 pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac by the end of June. That’s if Governor Gretchen Whitmer doesn’t reach an agreement about what to do with the pipeline before then.

Nessel has been a vocal critic of the major environmental risks associated with the pipeline in the past.

Nessel joins Detroit Today for a wide-ranging interview about her work so far in her new position.

She says that while she can’t guarantee that she will be successful in trying to close the pipeline, she is going to make every effort to “ensure that we don’t have the biggest oil spill in American history and we don’t have that oil on our hands here in Michigan.”

Nessel also discusses the ongoing legal proceedings of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal at MSU, as well as investigations into abuse within the Catholic church
