State of the State 2018
Gov. Rick Snyder’s final speech reviews his administration’s work and reveals agenda for final months.
In his final State of the State address, Gov. Rick Snyder reflected on his seven years leading Michigan, saying “reinvention was the goal” during his time in office and that he and his administration succeeded.
“There’s no question that Michigan’s a far better state today than 2010,” he said.
Snyder’s 53-minute address to the Legislature was much like his previous annual speeches, where he trumpeted successes and issued challenges to legislators and voters to support his plans.
Snyder also shared a few of his agenda items for his last several months in office. Next week, Snyder said, he would roll out environmental and infrastructure initiatives. During the remainder of his term, he said he’d welcome the world robotic championships, promote rural broadband and create a “Marshall Plan” for talent.
“It’s going to prepare Michigan students to prepare for the future,” he said. “Let’s ramp up the program, get it done and show the world we’re leading this path.”
Snyder called for civility in politics and public life, warning that candidates who promise to “fight” should send up red flags.
“Who are we fighting with? Ourselves. Fighting does have a role, on the beaches of Normandy not on the beaches of Lake Michigan,” Snyder said.
WDET carried the broadcast live on air, and the Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson program plans a full analysis at 9 a..m. Wednesday.
