On August 7th, Detroit’s youth poetry slam team travels to Chicago for Brave New Voices— the international youth poetry slam festival. Team members are participants in the Citywide Poets after-school program, run by the InsideOut Literary Arts Project. They’ve spent years preparing for this opportunity.
Detroit’s team placed fourth in the world at the 2011 competition. Last year the team wasn’t able to attend because they didn’t have enough money.
One of the young poets on the 2011 team was Justin Rogers. He recently stopped by WDET and told us about his experiences with and through slam poetry. He also performed his poem titled “Small Town City.”
This feature was produced by WDET’s Laura Weber-Davis.
