Democrat Gretchen Whitmer Looks To Separate Herself in Field of Candidates for Governor
The gubernatorial candidate talks about politics and the beginning stages of her campaign.
It is very early in Michigan’s 2018 gubernatorial race. That said, the race is beginning to take shape as hopeful candidates, such as Gretchen Whitmer, have started to announce their intention to run for governor. Whitmer, the former state Senate minority leader, announced her candidacy in January.
Since then she has been going all over Michigan to get a sense of the issues that people care about.
Whitmer speaks with Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson about politics in general and the beginning stages of her campaign.
“(Michigan residents) want to know, at the end of the day…that people in government have integrity and they’re looking out for the people in this state,” says Whitmer.
Whitmer also discusses her belief that a quality education is the key to reviving the state of Michigan.
“(The state of Michigan) led the world (in education) at one point and now we lag our own nation,” she says. “I believe that that includes starting with universal childhood education.”
