Knight Foundation is Making a Million Dollar Investment in Detroit Journalism
Knight Foundation announces $1.8 million in new investments to help better inform and engage residents of Detroit.
Today, Knight Foundation announced $1.8 million in new investments to help better inform and engage residents of the Detroit region. This is a reinvestment in the Detroit Journalism Cooperative (which WDET is a member of), a partnership of five nonprofit media organizations doing important work telling the city’s story, and new support for the Detroit Journalism Engagement Fund, a collaboration with the Ford Foundation and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
WDET 101.9FM is proud to collaborate with citizens and our local media partners to create more opportunities for our community to be informed, empowered and better connected through journalism. With all the talk about “fake news” and attacks against “the media”, at WDET we are proud to be an organization committed to ethical and fact-based journalism. We believe in holding power accountable, building understanding and providing you, our audience, with the necessary information to make up your own mind.
It’s hard to believe that WDET has been serving our region for nearly 70 years from our studios at Wayne State University.
As a whole, local journalism has been shrinking over the last few years. That means less reporting on the ground and less analysis of the issues that are affecting your life. This is why investments like the one announced today from the Knight Foundation matter so much in helping continue to provide the coverage you depend on. It’s even more incredible when you realize that it’s the generosity of thousands of listeners that has kept our news and local music programming on the air through it all. Today as we celebrate this investment in Detroit journalism we thank you our listeners and members for your continued support as work hard to ensure you are included in the process as we engage our community in telling the story of Detroit.
