MichMash: Setting the budget for the 2025 fiscal year

The Michigan House and Senate are creating their versions of the budget for the 2025 fiscal year. MichMash host Cheyna Roth and Gongwer News Service’s Alethia Kasben, sat down with state Rep. Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park) to discuss what items he would like to see on the agenda.

McFall says he has a few things personally he hopes he gets funding for.

“The [Michigan] Secure Retirement Savings [program]…I need money in the budget for that,” said McFall.

The program would be an IRA targeted at the 41% of Michigan workers that don’t have access to a retirement savings fund. McFall said the program would save the state money so that older residents wouldn’t need public assistance and they could age in place.
The budget process is generally a long process. The Michigan House and Senate are currently crafting their versions of the budget. McFall hopes the budget is finalized before the start of the summer.  

“I would like to see us get some more things across the finish line before we go on break for campaigning. I think Michigan wants us to get stuff across the finish line. I am expecting for us to get some things done. Some of it won’t happen until this fall. That will probably be the bulk of it.” he said.  

Of the bills getting the most attention, auto no fault is on the top of the list, according to the representative.
