Detroit Today: Why Dan Kildee will not seek reelection
Rep. Kildee has served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, succeeding his late uncle Dale Kildee in 2013.
Michigan U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Flint) announced last week he will not seek reelection in 2024, creating an opening for House Republicans to flip his highly competitive seat in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.
Kildee, who has served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, said he came to the decision after receiving a cancer diagnosis earlier in the year that made him reassess his future. Though he is now cancer-free, he said in a statement it was the right decision for him and his family.
MLive senior political reporter Simon Schuster joined Detroit Today on Monday to discuss the political ramifications of Kildee’s retirement in the district and in Congress as a whole.

Simon Schuster is a senior political reporter at MLive. He says with Congressman Dan Kildee not seeking reelection, the soon-to-be open seat could inspire a highly competitive election.
“There’s a lot of current-and former-elected officials that clearly have aspirations for higher office,” said Schuster.
