Detroit Evening Report: Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield might run for mayor

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield is considering a run for mayor.

Sheffield announced Tuesday that she’s formed an exploratory committee to look at her options. The move allows her to raise money for a possible run in 2025.
As the Detroit Free Press reports, the committee is officially called “Mary Sheffield for Detroit’s Future.” Sheffield sent Freep the following statement:
“Over the last 10 years, I have devoted my life in service to the residents of Detroit. While I have accomplished so much during my tenure on Council, I am constantly trying to find ways to do even more knowing the needs of Detroiters are still great. In that vein, I have filed a statement of organization for the office of Mayor solely for the purpose of exploring a potential run and because I have been advised it is the only legal method of doing so under the confines of the Michigan Campaign Finance statute.”
Sheffield has hired political consultants to advise her during the exploratory process. She was first elected to Detroit City Council in 2013 and became council president after her re-election in 2021.
Incumbent Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has not said whether he will run for a 4th term in 2025.
