Shiver on the River expo invites families to learn about Detroit’s environment
Organizers expect at least 400 people to attend the free event.
Friends of Detroit River are hosting the Shiver on the River Eco Fair Feb. 4 at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle.
Kaylee Peterson, the expo’s community outreach coordinator, says the event is a way for families to learn about the environment and have some fun.
“Due to the pandemic and construction on the island, we haven’t been able to host an in-person Shiver on the River since 2020. So we’re really excited to bring this event back to the public,” says Peterson.
Organizers hope to bring people out to events in the winter.
“We realized there’s kind of a gap in programming, especially in the wintertime. So we want to be able to connect folks to nature when it’s a little bit harder to get outside because it’s chilly or gray,” Peterson explains.
Shiver on the River is geared toward families and youth, featuring a caricature drawing and magic show along with expo booths.
“It’s a free educational experience for children to learn from local environmental organizations, such as friends of the Detroit River or the Belle Conservancy. We want to teach children the importance of our natural resources and help to create stewards of our environment.”
Peterson expects at least 400 people to attend the free event.
Shiver on the River runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday. Get details at detroithistorical.org.
