Tlaib wins re-election in Michigan’s 12th Congressional District

This week, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib won re-election in the newly redrawn 12th Congressional District, which includes parts of parts of Dearborn, Detroit, Westland, Livonia, Redford and Southfield.

Tlaib defeated Republican businessman Steven Elliott by a 71 to 26 percent margin.

Tlaib, who is a progressive Democrat, ran on economic issues such as inflation, corporate greed, and wages.

She says she’s appreciative of voters for coming out to the elections.

“Michigan will now be in the majority of the State House and State Senate, which is so critical with all the work that we do on the federal level, to have great partners and people with the same vision and same values to moving forward.”

Tlaib says she’s looking forward to serving the whole district, even those who did not vote for her.

“I promise you that I’m just gonna work hard for you if there’s a need, I want to help you. Getting people through everyday challenges and issues to me is as important than any bill or legislative policy work that I’m doing. And for me, I just want to improve everyone’s life and it doesn’t matter what your political background or whether or not they supported me.”

She says she will continue working on economic issues in the district such as helping elevate children out of poverty and creating more neighborhood service centers to connect people with resources.

“I don’t care if it’s city, local or county issues, I want to be there to be able to again, use the power of this office, to fight for my residents, for my neighbor to making sure that again, they feel heard and seeing all of the government but especially as I walk into the house floor and want them to know that I got their back.”

Tlaib has been serving in Congress since 2018 as the first Palestinian-American woman, and one of two Muslim-American women to be elected in Congress that year.
