Detroit Evening Report, September 9, 2022: Michigan Supreme Court allows abortion, voting rights proposals on November ballot

The Michigan Supreme Court has ordered that an abortion rights initiative will appear on the midterm ballot this November.
Thursday’s decision will allow voters to decide whether the right to an abortion will be enshrined in the state constitution. Lower court decisions have kept a 1931 state law that bans abortions except to save a mother’s life from going into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court reversed Roe V Wade in June.
The state’s high court also ruled that voters will decide in November whether to expand voting access. A coalition of organizations have proposed a measure that will provide more tools for absentee voting, expand voter ID options and create an early voting window.
Promote the Vote collected signatures to place the proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot.
