Detroit Evening Report, July 27, 2022: Detroit City Council offers $1 million settlement to Detroit Will Breathe

Protesters gather in downtown Detroit in response to the murder of George Floyd.

Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.

Detroit City Council offered a settlement for $1 million to activist group Detroit Will Breathe in an effort to end a two-year long lawsuit.

The group led the Detroit Black Lives Matter protests after George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer. The lawsuit filed by the organization against the city of Detroit claimed police used excessive force and violated their First and Fourth Amendment rights.

In September 2020, Detroit Will Breathe secured a temporary restraining order on the police’s use of force against protesters. The order stopped the police from using tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, sound cannons, flash grenades, chokeholds and mass arrests without probable cause.

The Detroit Free Press reports the settlement offers are for damages only, and if they are accepted, the city would also pay for any attorney fees the plaintiffs’ incurred up until the offer was made.
