What to look for from Third Man Records this month
The Detroit label’s Dave Buick joins CultureShift to talk new releases from Jack White, Rich Ruth and The Paranoyds.
Discovering new music is one of the things you’ve told us you love the most about WDET. To satisfy your desire for new sounds, CultureShift checks in with Jack White’s Third Man Records for a round-up of the most exciting new singles and albums the label is releasing each month.
This month, we spoke to Third Man’s Dave Buick about what’s new, beginning with this year’s second Jack White album, which came out last weekend.
“It’s not like any other Jack record,” Buick says of “Entering Heaven Alive.” “I think people are gonna really like it because Jack shows a side of him that he doesn’t show too often.”
An exclusive vinyl variant for the album is available at Third Man stores.
The label’s next exciting release comes from Rich Ruth. His full album “I Survived, It’s Over” will be out Aug. 12, and Buick says not to be intimidated by its genre.
“Don’t let ambient scare you, it’s a nice, exciting, chill, relaxing record.”
The Paranoyds also have an album coming out soon. The lead single, “Lizzie,” is out now, and the full album, “Talk, Talk, Talk,” will be out Sept. 9. Based in LA, Buick says the band was initially a last-minute addition to one of White’s shows, and it went so well that they were added to other dates as well.
“They have a lot of the late 70s-early 80s new wave vibes. A little Riot Grrrl in there, a little traditional girl group.”
Finally, a new edition of Third Man’s Maggot Brain quarterly magazine is out now, featuring cover art by iconic punk artist Raymond Pettibon.
“Whenever we get the new issues, they always blow us away.”
He says the new issue has a detailed feature on Detroit’s own John Brannon by Doug Coombe.
“I encourage everyone to read it whether you know him or not.”
