Detroit Evening Report, July 25, 2022: UAW holding 38th constitutional convention in Detroit
Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.
The United Auto Workers is holding its 38th Constitutional Convention July 25-28 at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit.
The union is hosting the event as it approaches an historic election where members will vote directly for international leadership. Previously, the UAW’s administration was elected by delegates – a system critics say lead to corruption. A settlement with the federal government after the convictions of several union officials required members be allowed to choose whether to adopt a one member-one vote model.
Members voted for change late last year.
Ray Curry, president of the 372,000 member UAW, says union representation is critical right now given that the major automakers are staking their futures on the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
