Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James Craig launched the “Green Light Detroit” program on Monday.

The project means the city will partner with gas stations to monitor live feeds from security cameras at the businesses to the Detroit Police Department’s new Real Time Crime Center. The center is a hub where officers can review the footage live. Duggan says the city is still working to improve the service.

“We are very close to the point of being able to snatch the picture form the crime scene at the Real Time Crime Center and shooting it out to the laptop of the patrol car in that area,” Duggan says. “When you start to do that now you have real-time crime prevention.”

Duggan says any business that is open past 10 p.m. is eligible to participate in this program. He says he’s hoping to get up to 200 businesses enrolled in the “Green Light Detroit” program by the end of the year.
