Detroit Evening Report: Excessive Heat Warning issued for metro Detroit this week

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for metro Detroit through 8 p.m. Friday.

Dangerously hot conditions around 95-100 degrees are expected every day this week with humidity bringing the heat index up to 101 degrees.

The city of Detroit is offering cooling centers for residents who need relief from the heat. They can visit 10 recreation centers and all open public library branches during normal business hours.

“We want everyone in the city of Detroit to have a safe place to go to get some relief,” said Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo in a statement. “The Detroit Health Department is working closely with the Parks and Recreation Division and Public Library branches to ensure safe, accessible cooling centers are available in neighborhoods across the city.”

Razo recommends limiting outdoor activities and drinking more water. She also urges residents to check on their neighbors and pets…and watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Many suburban libraries, community centers, police and fire stations and local government offices will double as cooling centers. Check with your city, village, or township.

• Chandler Park will host open Pickleball play and lessons for adults on Saturdays starting on June 22.
• Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist will visit the Wilder Branch of the Detroit Public Library on Tuesday for its Juneteenth celebration, set for 1 to 2 p.m.
• The Elmwood Park branch will host the Detroit Puppet Company for the “We Rise Above! Puppet Show” at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
