Detroit City Councilmember Mary Waters has been in the race for Michigan’s 13th Congressional district in a primary challenge of incumbent Democrat Shri Thanedar.

At the Mackinac Policy Conference on Thursday, Waters picked up a big endorsement from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

“We need leadership — wakes up every morning fighting for the city and gets it done and for that reason I am very proud to endorse and campaign for Mary Waters for Congress,” Duggan said.

Former State Sen. Adam Hollier was also challenging Thanedar, but failed to collect enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot.

Thanedar – a millionaire businessman – has a large advantage in campaign money. However, Waters says she has something more important than money.

“That candidate has to spend what I’ve already earned, and that’s goodwill from the people,” she said.

Thanedar moved to Detroit and successfully ran for the state House before winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022 — marking the first time Detroit was without African American representation in decades.

Waters says it’s important in a majority Black district to have a candidate who “understands what the issues are, what people’s concerns are.”
