Soul Saturday: Paul Randolph discusses bass guitar, international acclaim, new music and more

Since the days of James Jamerson and the Motor City Funk Brothers, the bass guitar has been a central part of rhythm and blues music.

The instrument is also core to the identity of Grammy-nominated Paul Randolph, whose prowess on the bass guitar features prominently in several of the Detroit native’s releases.

In 2022, the Jazzanova vocalist founded his own record label called Sun Temple Records.

Following the release of his latest single “Time 4 Us,” WDET’s Soul Saturday sat down with Randolph to discuss all things music — including one of the greatest lessons he ever learned as a bass player, releasing new music and why Slave’s “Just a Touch of Love” is one of his favorite bass lines of all time.
