Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Ambassador Meshal Bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar in Washington and community dignitaries commemorate the opening of Muhammad Ali Park in Detroit on June 21, 2023.

The Islamic Center of Detroit hosted an inauguration and ribbon cutting ceremony to open the new Detroit City Park named after the legendary athlete Muhammad Ali. Ali wasn’t just a boxer, he stood for Black empowerment and fought for equality using the teaching of faith. The Islamic Center welcomed Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, the Ambassador of Qatar in Washington, Mr. Meshal Bin Hamad Al Thani and community dignitaries to commemorate the park.

Muthanna Hanooti is the Community Relations Director for the Islamic Center of Detroit. Hanooti joined CultureShift to discuss how Muhammad Ali Park will bring the community together across faiths, overcoming some of the challenges facing District 7 and what’s next for the center.
