Michigan politics is moving at a rate that many call unprecedented.

During the first five months of the new legislative session — in which Democrats have a majority in the state legislature for the first time in over 40 years — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed 38 bills into law.

These include increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit, adding legal protections for LGBTQ individuals, repealing right-to-work laws, and broadening background checks and registration requirements for firearms and more.

What additional bills have passed the state House? What budget negotiations have occurred and what are the next steps for the Legislature?

Michigan House Speaker Pro Tempore Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) joined Detroit Today to discuss what her party has been able to accomplish so far this year, and what’s still on their agenda.

Laurie Pohutsky is the House Speaker Pro Tempore of the Michigan House of Representatives. Pohutsky states that Michigan Democrats’ work in prior sessions helps them focus their agenda.

“We have, essentially, 40 years of backlogged policy to get to,” says Pohutsky.
