Rep. Haley Stevens and Eric Esshaki Make Case to Voters for 11th Congressional District
Rep. Stevens and challenger Esshaki join Stephen Henderson on Detroit Today to talk about their campaigns to represent Michigan’s 11th Congressional District.
Two years ago, the midterm elections ushered in what some have deemed the blue wave. Republicans lost a number of congressional races to Democrats in districts that were once solidly red.
Michigan’s 11th Congressional District is one of those seats that flipped red to blue in 2018. Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a former Obama Administration official and manufacturing industry professional, became the first Democrat to represent the district in decades.
Now, there is a GOP bid to win back the seat with Eric Esshaki. An attorney from Birmingham, MI with a nursing background, Esshaki is challenging Rep. Stevens from the right.

Rep. Haley Stevens is the incumbent Democrat representing Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, running for a second term in the U.S. House.
Despite running on universal healthcare in her 2018 race, Rep. Stevens now says she supports expanding the Affordable Care Act. “I take a look at all bills before I co-sponsor, it’s way too costly and disruptive,” says Rep. Stevens on moving away from Medicare for all legislation. Instead, Stevens says she is focused on stabilizing the ACA, cutting prescription drug costs and protecting people with pre-existing conditions.

Eric Esshaki is the Republican nominee to represent Michigan’s 11th Congressional district, he’s challenging incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens.
He says he is focused on setting out plans for policy issues like healthcare reform and economic rehabilitation. “We have to focus on the economy and what we do about COVID and healthcare moving forward,” says Esshaki.
He insists the current health care system isn’t working and is simply too costly. “I don’t care what you call it, ACA is not working, Obamacare didn’t do anything to address the cost of healthcare,” says Esshaki.
