If 2016 is any indication Michigan will be a critical battleground state in the November election. After more than two decades of Democratic domination in presidential races Michigan voters gave Donald Trump a shocking victory by the narrowest of margins.

“This election is not a referendum on Donald Trump, it’s a referendum on us, on who we are.” — Senator Cory Booker

Can he repeat the victory here in 2020?

U.S. Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, says that Trump’s rhetoric is reminiscent of politician’s past.

He says Trump is utilizing a familiar playbook, employing demagoguery to get people to vote. “This election is not a referendum on Donald Trump, it’s a referendum on us, on who we are,” says Booker. He adds that it’s important for people to embrace the understanding that we have a common destiny as a country.

On his differences with Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. in the primary, Booker says he is glad that Biden is the kind of person to admit when he didn’t get something right. He says this especially true on Biden’s stance on criminal justice reform. Booker says he stands with Biden because he has a good vision of where we are as a country.
