A program at the University of Michigan is launching virtual fitness classes for kids.

The Exercise and Sports Science Initiative will debut 20-minute cardio workouts recorded by Michigan physical education teachers starting Aug. 1. The goal is to provide a fitness option to Michigan children who may not or cannot play outside.

“We know that there are many kids in the state and throughout the nation who do not live in a neighborhood that allows them to play safely outside.” — Rebecca Hasson, University of Michigan

“What we’re trying to promote is the idea that you can be active anywhere,” says Rebecca Hasson, associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Michigan.

Hasson says the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many children to stay inside at home, often in areas that don’t have safe recreational areas.

“We know that there are many kids in the state and throughout the nation who do not live in a neighborhood that allows them to play safely outside,” she says. “That’s usually some of the comments we’ll get from individuals that will say, well when I was a kid, I just went outside to play. But we do now.”
