Detroit Non-Profit Assists Pregnant Women, Mothers During Pandemic
Brilliant Detroit leverages it’s neighborhood-based centers to provide supplies and support to young mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused several hardships for young families in Detroit, from unemployment to food insecurity.
“We all need people that are gonna help and sometimes it’s another pregnant mom.” — Cindy Eggleton, Brilliant Detroit
Brilliant Detroit is an educational and social support non-profit with hubs in city neighborhoods. Recently, it received a large donation to specifically assist families during the pandemic. CEO Cindy Eggleton says this has allowed the non-profit to provide additional support for families with children from infancy to 8-years-old.
Navigating social services is “a really sometimes difficult system and it’s difficult to find your way,” Eggleton says. “It’s difficult to get the support you need when you have a lot of other things going on as well.”
Brilliant Detroit is hosting diaper and supply giveaways at its neighborhood hubs as well as after school programs. But Eggleton says the group also connects families to one another.
“We all need people that are gonna help and sometimes it’s another pregnant mom,” she says.
