The U.S. Senate is about to take up an emergency coronavirus package. The legislation aims to strengthen the safety net for people and families disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and the drastic measures meant to slow its spread.
Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) has been out front on this issue as ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) says it is imperative that COVID-19 testing be broadly deployed and that it is free regardless of insurance coverage.
On the United States’ response to the emerging health crisis, Peters says, “Clearly, we’re behind what other countries were able to do.” Looking forward, Peters says the Senate’s goal is to prevent the quick spread of the disease in order to avoid overwhelming the health care system.
On the economy, Peters says that the global pandemic’s impact will be significant.
