Longtime Detroit music journalist Jeff Milo has been plugging ears into the Detroit scene for years with his prolific Deep Cutz blog and his YouTube series, “The Milo Show.” Here, he gives us his rundown for what music to catch this weekend that isn’t… uh… playing Little Caesars Arena if you catch our vibe.

Friday, February 28
Hamtramck Music Festival
What: The Hamtramck Music Fest is back for its seventh year. This is a grassroots, volunteer-run, musician-power festival that spreads 200 local bands across more than 20 venues.
Sounds like: J. Walker & the Crossguards, performing Friday night at Port Bar, “Country Girl 2.” Dirt Room, “Headroom,” at Barter Friday night. This song is the first single officially released by Wayne State’s first label, Old Main Records.
Singer-songwriter Ohly at the Old Miami
What: Christian Ohly is a local singer/songwriter who’s getting ready to release an album in the springtime. He draws a lot of those soothing, super-melodic Americana-folk vibes from the Head and the Heart and The Avett Brothers, with lots of inflection on his voice, some careful vibrato, and a lot of heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics that are sung in a voice that’s tender, but also a softly booming baritone.

What: Raazzz at the Ghost Light, debut live performance. Dani Darling at Whiskey in the Jar.

Singer-songwriter Chey Halliwill at the Tap Room in Ypsilanti
What: Chey Halliwill is a singer with a very powerful voice and intricate musical styling. Jazzy Robot are a new improvisational recording project between two of the founding members of Honey Monsoon. Then we have Thompson Springs, they’re a Chicago-based rock and folk influenced band that draw from some iconic influences, like Neil Young, but also Kurt Vile.
Sounds like: Chey Halliwill “Archer.”
