Longtime Detroit music journalist Jeff Milo has been plugging ears into the Detroit scene for years with some prolific blogging, starting in the mid 00’s with Deep Cutz, and continuing with his new site and ongoing podcast, “Ideas Adrift.” Here, he gives us his rundown for what music to catch this weekend.

January 10
Make America Funk Again! At the Blind Pig
What: Some serious appreciation for funk music in Washtenaw County, or even in the western pockets of Oakland County, like South Lyon.
Who’s playing: Bands like Liquid Thickness and Sabbatical Bob and many others are really generating some seriously groovy, sharp, sleek, danceable funk jams. There’s also a band with a great band name, Tell Yo Mama, who come from the Lansing area. Liquid Thickness are an Ypsilanti band that just put out their debut full length album, and Sabbatical Bob are an Ann Arbor group.
Sounds like: Sabbatical Bob “Alright.”
The Gashounds at the Ghostlight
What: This is The Gashounds party to celebrate their debut 7′ record.
Who’s playing: They’ll be joined by Junior Gemini and Duende.

Saturday, January 11
Pamela Wise at the N’Namdi Center for Performing Arts
What: Jazz pianist and composer Pamela Wise will be performing, part of the Art Center’s Abstract Music Series spotlighting artists who have been honored with Kresge Awards for their vision and their talent.
Who’s playing: She’ll be joined by percussionist Chi Amen Ra and saxophonist Salim Washington. The theme is to create some celebratory music for the new year, along with features artists like Candice Johnsing, providing a dance performance and spoken word by Mbiya Chui, and other rhythm artists like Louis M. Jones III, on drums, and Marion Hay on bass.

Edison Hollow at PJs Lager House
What: The Decibel Spectacular at PJ’s Lager House.
Who’s playing: The Jackpine Snag are a heavy rock blues trio from Lansing. Karalavara, meanwhile, are a four-piece from here in Detroit, drawing from influences like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but also garage and psychedelic outfits like Stooges and Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Sounds like: Edison Hollow, “Road Song.”
